Do's and Don'ts
Do:
- be sure your intentions and purpose are understood.
- take time to become sufficiently familiar with the facility (water or wastewater) to understand the problems.
- counsel and advise the individual regarding his/her facility problems and responsibilities.
- maintain a professional but friendly relationship.
- seek assistance if you are unsure.
- recommend they consult with CWQCD if matter is required to be reported.
- put your advice in the form of suggestions.
- encourage professional development and education.
- keep comments verbal.
- avoid contact with the news media.
- be sincere and serious.
- endeavor to develop trust and respect.
- make it clear you may be contacted at any reasonable time to discuss problems.
maintain follow-up contact with frequency and duration depend on the situation.
Don't:
- act on behalf of the individual.
- attempt to advise where you are not qualified.
- allow yourself to become involved in local politics or personal conflicts.
- do engineering or design.
- supplant their professional consultants.
- recommend anyone - specific companies, products or services.
- initiate contact or speak on behalf of community to news media
give legal advice. - discuss water rights issues.
